The Body Baker December 17, 2006

I know it’s not a new thing, but I was astonished by these images. A Thai undergraduate artist and also a son of a baker started to make breads resembling to human body parts. He paints these, improve them with chocholate, etc.

Kittiwat Unarrom has serious aims with his works. He said:

Of course, people were shocked and thought that I was mad when they saw the works. But once they knew the idea behind it, they understood and became interested in the work itself, instead of thinking that I am crazy… Everyone’s life is rushed nowadays, even when it comes to eating. When we eat, we don’t think about our health or safety, we only think of our taste buds.

When people see the bread, they don’t want to eat it. But when they taste it, it’s just normal bread. The lesson is ‘don’t judge just by outer appearances.

It’s so great. Someone invents a spectacular, new way of art, and additionally he sends a message with it.

2. Jeffrey - December 26, 2006

yucks. will anyone seriously eat it? its like challenging ur own preconceived notions to do something u personally would find repugnant.

maybe cannibals will be interested with this?

3. ncurse - December 26, 2006

Yes, the article says that many people wanted to taste it. And they liked it. :)

4. Rob - December 30, 2006

OK, this lends itself to a ton of puns, like:
- He must have graduated at the head of his class
- Everybody give this guy a hand!
- The people in town know that there is trouble afoot.
- I wouldn’t have the guts to make this stuff.
- He has a leg up on the other bakers in town.
- He honed his abdomen skills at the Naval Academy.
- He improved upper extremity skills in the Army.
- The feet are delivered in a toe truck.

Sorry.

Rob

LOL… I loved these. :)

[...] Bertalan Meskó from ScienceRoll submitted a bunch of very interesting posts. The one that caught my eye was one of a baker from Thailand who bakes bread in the shape of human body parts. What is intriguing is how realistic (and gruesome) these creations appear. I took the liberty of commenting with a bunch of bad puns. [...]

I’m also reminded of the little images left as prayers or thanks at certain “healing shrines”. This goes back to various pagan faiths, but has also been “Christianized”, e.g. in Mexico.

8. Tom - January 4, 2007

Maybe this is where the “Roll” in ScienceRoll comes from? ;-)

9. ncurse - January 4, 2007

LOL…

Scienceroll comes from Blogroll. Easy to remember, easy to type… Just a bit false as I write about medicine and genetics, not all the branches of science.

Now how to get the same idea across in the meat industry. Can you shape meat to look like a mad cow? I would like to challenge anyone out there.

11. Jetta - May 9, 2007

Why is it that this seems a bit more disturbing than the body part Halloween cakes? It’s probably just me…I guess these look more real…

Wow, this guy really needs to go get laid or something.

44. Sue MacLean - June 6, 2007

..it could be laminated and used as Halloween props. We create a haunted house each Halloween, not too gruesome but we try to get some realistic elements in it and the kids enjoy it. We’ve baked bones before i never thought of baking body parts. Hes a genious making them so life like! Im gonna work with bread dough and see if i can have any luck, but i know its not gonna come anywhere’s near the artwork that this guy creates. Hats off to ya Kittiwat Unarrom, your very talented.

45. adriana - June 7, 2007

hahah gross that looks wierd

46. LAURA NEADOW - July 17, 2007

wanna go out

47. family portrait artist - November 8, 2007

Okay I always believe in the saying don’t judge the book by its cover but in this case I’m not sure if I can still afford to say that. I couldn’t stand eating in a restaurant with hanging bodies of turkeys and chickens hanging at the side of the resto near its kitchen. It’s very morbid. How much more with this kind of scenery in a bake shop?! Don’t you think our sense of taste are also affected by our imagination?

48. Bertalan Meskó - November 8, 2007

Of course, it is affected, but that’s how it works. :)
