Gene Genie: submit articles for the next edition March 19, 2007

Posted by Bertalan Meskó in Gene Genie.

Based on Timothy Erickson’s thoughts, I decided to start a new blog carnival on genes and gene-related diseases. Our plan is to cover the whole genome before 2082 (it means 14-15 genes every two weeks). But we also accept articles on the news of genomics and genetics. The first issue of Gene Genie was published at Scienceroll, the second one at Sciencesque. The third is going to be held at Genetics and Health in one week.

So don’t forget to submit your articles to Hsien-Hsien Lei! (hsien [at] b5media.com)

Great idea, where do you find all the time?

Would you please let your readers know that information for nonscientists is available at Genetic Alliance? http://www.geneticalliance.org. After 25 years in business, they are still serving as a liasion between families with genetic conditions and agencies that provide services. They also lobby for genetic fairness. With their help, I am attending the Annual Clinical Medical Genetics meeting in Nashville starting on Thursday. I’m really looking forward to this and will be posting information on my own blog, Genetizen, at http://www.geneforum.org.

Want some links on genetics and spontaneous mutation and disease in offspring? Spontaneous Mutations are created when sperm cells divide from the ancestral sperm making cells. Mutations also seem to be created in sperm if one drinks more than 3 cups of coffee per day. There are people who have looked at what happens in sperm. Jonathan Sebat et al could probably find a lot if they next did the same assays that they did on blood on the spermatagonia, and sperm of all the fathers involed including the control group.

Your very welcome. Here are a couple of links for those that don’t have the time for a lot of reading.

This is probably a well-known paper to most of you by James F. Crow on Spontaneous Mutations http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/94/16/8380

This is also a most important paper on phenotypes involved in de novo paternal germline mutations by Dr. Dolores Malaspina.

One more may be important and came out over 5 years before Jonathan Sebat et al. thrilling research results:

I found an interesting article about cannabis addiction in the Independent:

“Cannabis: An apology
In 1997, this newspaper launched a campaign to decriminalise the drug. If only we had known then what we can reveal today… ”

I refer it in my blog.
