Top 10: Virtual Medical Sites in Second Life!
I’m still involved in constructing the future of medical education at the Ann Myers Medical Center, but I always try to find other medical places in the virtual world. Here is a list of my favourite ones. If you happen to know more, don’t hesitate to leave a comment for us.
1. Ann Myers Medical Center: it aims to assist students to become more proficient in initial exam history and physicals; to become more proficient in the analysis of MRIs, CTs and X-rays. You can join to take part in the first medical simulation (maybe this July). TELEPORT!
2. Heart Murmurs: a great example of educational possibilities in Second Life as you can listen to cardiac murmurs. TELEPORT
3. The Gene Pool: far the best genetic educational place in Second Life. Quizes, animations and you can even wear your favourite chromosome. TELEPORT
4. Virtual Neurological Education Centre: it allows the medical field an online virtual environment for training and demonstrating a virtual experience of a neurological disorder. TELEPORT
5. Wheelies @ Second Ability: A place for people with disability. You can even try how it is like to use a wheelchair. TELEPORT
6. Medical Library at Health Info Island: you can do PubMed searches from Second Life; find people at the Medical Research Desk or at the Consumer Health Information Desk. A growing medical virtual community! TELEPORT
7. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: according to the National Review of Medicine, they are one of the early adopters. They consider Second Life as an educational opportunity they just couldn’t pass up. TELEPORT
8. UC Davis’ Virtual Hallucinations: they’re not kidding. You can experience virtual hallucinations. TELEPORT
9. Hottie Hospital: Play doctors and nurses, be a patient or a cute receptionist. Gynaecology, sperm donation, sexgen therapy, medical examination… TELEPORT
10. RX Pirates: a really strange museum. TELEPORT
10+1: Play2Train: Play2Train will provide opportunities for training through interactive role playing and will be the foundation for our emergency preparedness educational machinima. Short demo scene of mass casualty incident simulation:
I hope you enjoyed this journey into the medical world of Second Life. I hope these sites and hospitals will play an important role in the future of medical education.

Ahh, Role play sex at 9? O.o
Hello, it’s been a while! Do you think that there is room for medical visualization in second life? I haven’t had time to explore second life yet, but I’m hearing more and more people using it so I’m becoming more intrigued.
Hey Vanessa!
Of course, there is! Register then let me know about it and I guide you through the many medical sites inside.
It’s worth a try!
I think you’ve got a great site. I would never have known you weren’t a native English speaker if I hadn’t noticed your name on the second or third page I visited.
Thanks for the info on Second Life, it gives me an excuse to try it out other than trying to meet hot (virtual) chicks. It sounds like a more incluslive community every time I hear about it.
The entry about the youngest mother is also instructive. I’m always amazed at how little we (Americans, at least) understand about developmental psychology. We are big on trying to prosecute people under the age of 16 as adults, for example. That the young girl in your medical case history should have little interest in a real baby at age five compared to the imaginative play she could get from a doll is a very natural situation for such an unusual situation.
Thanks,
rationalpsychic

I’m really thankful for the kind words! I always worry about my English so it was really kind from you.
I subscribed to you blog.
Anyway, if you’re interested, I can guide you through some “hot” places in Second Life.
Wonderful gallery of samples for someone interested in finding out what’s happening on the SL front in medicine! Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words!
Virtual Neuro Opening soon in Second Life!
Bill, could we know the exact date of opening?
Hottie Hospital?! Seems in conflict with your HONCode accreditation!
They reviewed me and everything was ok.
These islands don’t seem to go where they say they don’t. Virtual neurological education center, the medical library took me to the top of a roof. Can you look at these?
hi thats realy intrensting this the first time i hear that they have medical centers there ?
im new to all the concept of second life
first of all how to participate ? where to log in ?? how to do it ?? im realy intrested to know it
pls let me know
thanks
Nono, I’m really glad you’re interested.
First, please register at secondlife.com, download the program on that page and then you can connect to Second Life. When you’re inside, let me know. It would be my pleasure to be your guide.
Sorry, finally got a chance to stop by…Great to see lists like this. They are hard to keep up to date (as I am sure we both know!)
On my list are also:
Virtual Hallucinations
Sexual Health Sim
Hope to meet you in-world sometime,
John Norris
SL: Knoh Oh
Dear John,
Absolutely! There are more and more similar sites so I can’t even follow all of these projects.
Would be great to meet in SL!
My SL name is Berci Dryke.
Hey, look at this post, too: http://runningahospital.blogspot.com/2008/02/old-and-new.html
Hi there, I’m surprised you mention CDC which has yet to unveil its island as well as some of the other sites, over and above the American Cancer Society which is already live and very active. ACS has set standards in education and support in SL as well as being very successful in engaging the community and raising funds through its Relay For Life event in SL. Do take a look at American Cancer Society (129,7,23).
I really should, Judith! Thank you for the suggestion!
It seems to me many of the SLURL’s here are outdated. Is there a way to get updates?
Thank you, Kate for your comment! I update the teleport links immediately.
I tried to find the Virtual Neurological Center. All the links took me to Lost Island NW, and there doesn’t seem to be any center there. Just a lot of residences.
I’d really like to find it.
I’d suggest that one of the most comprehensive displays of links to medical areas in Second Life is in Second Life itself on International Schools Island … in the Medical Centre at
http://slurl.com/secondlife/International%20Schools/86/36/25
But I am biased .. I built it (or rather ongoing … building it)
Shamblesguru Voom (in S.L.)
Chris, thank you for the link, I must check it out.
Hi, I’m working with some people at Stanford’s Medical center, and we’re looking for a cluster of medical simulations or just medical centers in Second Life in which we can possibly attain a parcel to start a medical simulation. Would you have any suggestions?
Aditya,
I think the Ann Myers Medical Center (ammc.wordpress.com) would love to help you out.
Please contact me (berci.mesko at gmail.com) if you have further questions.
Berci
Thanks again for your post .
Really this is great!
Bertalan, this is great, when was your last update of a top ten for SL?
Denise,
Thank you! Actually, months ago.
But I keep readers updated here: http://scienceroll.com/category/second-life/
Berci
This is a huge list.. thanks for sharing
I am interested in second life and its potential. However, while I consider myself savvy in using the Internet and am very comfortable with computers, I cannot figure out how to use second life features and functionality. In my opinion, if I cannot use it easily, the average person will never catch on.
this is one of the best health blogs i have found so far and that too i am amazed to know that tmaintained by a this is maintained by a medical student. I being a medical student too feel that all credits to the owner of this site Berci for his contribution in making this blog useful and informative! Hope this blog will reach several milestones in the days to come! all the best
Great !

It’s worth a try!
There is actually research being carried out at the University of Nottingham in Second Life to see if mood and anxiety could be improved using Second Life!
Those carrying out the research need people who already use Second Life to spend some time in world and to complete a questionnaire before and after doing this. Personal details don’t even have to be given if you would prefer not to. It takes about 30-40 minutes.
If you are interested in taking part please send an e-mail to secondliferesearch@live.co.uk and the investigators can send you more information about the research.
PIVOTE is an open-source authoring system for learning in virtual worlds. Created by Daden originally for the JISC funded PREVIEW project, PIVOTE is now an open-source project and available for free download and use by anyone.
Check out St George’s University Hospital in SL

also for more information on PIVOTE go to: http://www.daden.co.uk/pivote.htm
Very cool- especially to a 16 year old physician. I especially like the idea of wearing your favorite chromosome, but have you heard of Palomar West (which will be completed in 2011.) The purpose of Palomar West (I believe) is for physicians to be able to help patients with their problems over the internet.
For a virtual tour of Palomar West, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yhaK7lto0A.
I’m also a member of AMMC and I like it very much.
İ like the 3rd one, it will be funny to wear yr best chromose

I am a medical student actually carrying out some research right now in second life. It is a randomised controlled trial concerning virtual interventions. If anyone is interested on wants to know more let me know secondliferesearch@hotmail.co.uk.
Interested it chatting to any medical professionals using second life as well
The studies on Second Life are really fascinating and the potential for students is great.
Very nice post. but not believable
Looks like your site is getting alot of visitors.
I do believe all of the ideas you have presented to your post. They’re really convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are very quick for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
This is the best medical and pharmaceutical blog
