I’m going to guess that it’s something from particle physics, where it’s common to have whole consortia working on things that require particle accelerators and such.

The first name is usually the person who wrote this article and the last is usually the principal investigator. This looks like some kinds of consortium and I think it’s going too far to list everyone’s name (including the cleaning ladies, pizzaboys…) in this article.

As I have heard (by now ), in basic science articles, the first (real) contributors are in alphabetical order, and the rest (cleaning ladies, pizzaboys etc.) are …well…the rest.
