One of my favourite sites is Crooked Brains where I found these fantastic images yesterday. They write:

It’s a wonder to know such a beauty in the stone can be a problem in a kidney.

Anyway, personally I find it hard to remember all the types of kidney stones. But with these photos, it should be an easier task:

my ct came back to reveal that i have a 12mm stone not looking forward to that. I am having the ultrasonic op done and i hope that it breaks it up in to small ones … real small

Treatment for kidney stones depends on the type of the stone and the cause of stone formation. Drinking lots of water and making a few dietary changes can reduce chances of kidney stone formation. Sometimes water and dietary control may not enough to reduce formation of kidney stones. Medications may be necessary to reduce the level of certain chemicals like calcium, uric acid, oxalate or cystine. Medicines may also be prescribed to relieve pain associated with movement and presence of big stones.
