BioMed Central launched a YouTube Channel November 25, 2007

BioMed Central has recently made a big step towards web 2.0. The new YouTube Channel of Biomed Central is a perfect example which, I hope, will be followed by other open access journals as well. A screenshot from their blog:
We aim to include as many videos as possible relating to BioMed Central, so if you have created a video about an article you have recently published, or on open access issues in general, please upload it to YouTube and send us the link so we can add it to the channel.
BioMed Central is an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate open access to peer-reviewed biomedical research.
All original research articles published by BioMed Central are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. BioMed Central views open access to research as essential in order to ensure the rapid and efficient communication of research findings.
Do you happen to know other interesting, medicine/science-related YouTube channels?
I love the idea of pairing open access with video. The problem will be what it has always been, however. Scientists never learn to communicate well in any medium besides a classroom, if even there. We have interviewed nearly a thousand scientists (www.sciencentral.com) and have found that most scientists are grateful for a thorough preinterview and all the other prep work we invest in them. I have given seminars at AAAS and other meetings about communicating science to a broader public than people within their fields. No matter how experienced or inexperienced the scientist, it is clear that they desperately want to learn how to be professional communicators, but rarely have the opportunity to do so. Yes, there are blow-hards who believe they are as great at film-making as they are at, say, walking on water… but leave them aside. Here is my real question:
Who will teach scientists to communicate effectively through video?

Eliene: Perfect question! And this line is the sentence of the day:

Some months ago, I had a post about the modern scientist and I stated that communation skills became very important for scientists, even if they like it or not.

This looks like a good idea. I just hope that this is not similar to those documentary videos I’ve seen way back in college. They are boring and instead of motivating me to watch it from start to finish, I usually fell asleep.
