I’ve already come up with lists of the best medical places in Second Life; the best medical wikis and the best services with medical videos/animations. So it’s time to dedicate another one to community sites created for scientists and physicians. This idea came to my mind when I read the post of Bora Zivkovic.

(The list is being constantly updated)

  • ResearchGATE: Registered users of the free-of-charge platform can present their research work in a personal profile, exchange messages and build groups for peer-to-peer discussions (more).

  • Nature Network: Nature Network is the online meeting place for you and fellow scientists to gather, talk and find out about the latest scientific news and events. Science is an international endeavor and deserves a global stage for discussion.

May I add Mendeley.com? We’d like to think of our vision as a “Last.fm for research” – not only because of the conceptual, but also because of personnel similarities.

Mendeley offers a free software for managing and sharing your academic papers, with a view towards showing you statistics about up-and-coming topics in your academic discipline, reading recommendations, and people with similar research interests.

There’s a short demo video on our homepage, or on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ct4O0Ect18

“41,000 members in 12 years….not really successful!”

By what measure do you define success? The business model of The Science Advisory Board is not to simply add warm bodies in the hope of attracting advertisers or selling subscriptions — we don’t accept advertising, don’t sell subscriptions and never rent out access to our membership list (how many journals or professional societies can make that claim?) We’ve built an expert-on-demand network that has profitably delivered insights to over 300 companies engaged in the development of new life science technologies. One recent entry into the field claims to have recruited 80,000 members in a year but they spent $20+ million doing it and according to their recent SEC filing are unsure of their ability to continue business operations. Who’s the successful company?

37. Albert Meige - August 21, 2009

Dear all,

I have poster a similar comment on another thread, and realized afterwards it would fit better here. Sorry for that!

I am the creator of yet another social network for scientists: http://www.presans.com.

However, in our case, the social network is actually “just” a tool, as what PRESANS really is about is open innovation: PRESANS is a new open innovation intermediary spinning off of the Ecole Polytechnique in France. We are launching the private beta period mid-september 2009. Registration is already open on http://www.presans.com.

Basically, PRESANS is a social network for Experts (researchers, engineers etc.). We provide Experts with a range of free services through our internet platform and Experts will be paid significant rewards to solve R&D challenges (from tens to hundreds of K euros). So the social network is really a tool to help us to manage and keep the contact with the Experts.

By Expert, understand
- a person such as a researcher in the public or private sector, a PhD student, an engineer, an inventive person, etc.
- an organization such as a Technology Transfer Office, a cluster, a laboratory, a startup, etc.

This means that, even if PRESANS is another social network for scientist, this one is also for you!

Thank you very much for reading this long post and I am really looking forward to reading your comments and to seeing you PRESANS (http://www.presans.com/). And REMEMBER: registration has already opened for the beta and the actual launching is mid-september 2009.

Cheers,

Albert Meige, founder of PRESANS (and researcher in Plasma Physics!)
