Juhan Sonin has a great Flickr image set including a few images about the possible design of a personal health card that we could use in the future when visiting our doctor. No more papers, just a little card that the doctor’s computer can read easily.

Would you like to have such a card instead of papers?

There’s been a great deal of European Commission funded research and development work into health cards over the past decade or so. Still, the design in the image looks far more innovative than anything I recall seeing from such work. will try and dig some stuff out and post, as it may be of value/interest for discussion.

One of main projects has been NETC@RDS – http://netcards-project.com/web/news – but as far as I can see (and I have been a reviewer of the projects), the functionality is limited.

I think the actual design of such cards is a lesser issue, relative to the functionality, in terms of what it can store and what it can interface with. i think there is a lot of potential in cards (or similar) carrying personal health data, and few companies or organisations have got much right in terms of the potential.

I’m glad you liked it, Peter!

Have you seen his other sketches? http://www.flickr.com/photos/juhansonin/tags/healthcard/

Well France is doing well about it, at Annency they opened the “hospital of the future”

I’ve wrote about it on my blog but damn it’s in Spanish (http://www.somosmedicina.com/2008/12/un-hospital-diferente.html), I’ll translate it…

I’ll come again when I got it

I’ve nearly forgot it!!!

In Spain we have the Electronic Prescription Cards which are being established since 2006, I don’t know if this exists somewhere else.

This health card surely can be a step when it comes to the basic health reports.

Design does matter.
… and so does the health data format. Where is the simple health data format that nails 80% of the cases? CCR is close but not quite there.

This is the current state of design ‘standards’ on health ID cards:

Whoa.
