Visual Map of Your Online Presence August 19, 2009

Paulo Nuin shared this interesting link today on his Friendfeed account. I’m not sure Personas works perfectly, but shows some useful things about what people can find when they do a search for your name online. You insert your name, then let it visualize everything. In details:

Enter your name, and Personas scours the web for information and attempts to characterize the person – to fit them to a predetermined set of categories that an algorithmic process created from a massive corpus of data. The computational process is visualized with each stage of the analysis, finally resulting in the presentation of a seemingly authoritative personal profile.

It turned out my keywords are online, education and medical. Seems to be pretty accurate.

How to Publish a Scientific Comment in 123 Easy Steps August 19, 2009

I will hopefully start PhD in the field of personalized genetics this October and just submitted my first manuscript to a genetics journal, so I’m getting closer to understand how scientific bureaucracy works. But now Prof. Rick Trebino (Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Physics) published a hilarious guide or timeline (pdf) about his own experiences.

The essence of science is reasoned debate. So, if you disagree with something reported in a scientific  paper, you can write a “Comment” on it.

Yet you don’t see many Comments.

Some believe that this is because journal editors are reluctant to publish Comments because Comments reveal their mistakes—papers they shouldn’t have allowed to be published in the first place. Indeed, scientists often complain that it can be very difficult to publish one. Fortunately, in this article, I’ll share with you my recent experience publishing a Comment, so you can, too.

Once I wrote about medical chart bloopers such as “O2 sat: 110% on room air”. Later I shared some medical slang terms such as Bury the Hatchet which means accidentally leaving a surgical instrument inside a patient.

Now here is SlangRN.com, where you can find and share medical slang terms.

Ed Bennett is probably the most famous hospital web manager nowadays and he maintains lists that are more than interesting. Now he published two lists. One about the most popular hospitals on Twitter ranked by the number of followers. And another one about the most popular hospitals on Youtube ranked by the number of subscribers.

Do you remember which US hospital I have featured for plenty of times? Of course, Mayo Clinic that is also on the top of both of the lists.

Ves Dimov from Clinical Cases and Images had some comments on this. He wrote “There are a few surprises since the ranking definitely does not much the list of America’s Best Hospitals published every year by the U.S. News & World Report”

Here is a slideshow about the web 2.0 coverage of Mayo Clinic I shared a few weeks ago:

Update: Ed Bennett also has a Top 20 Hospitals on Facebook list.
