Meteorite hits doctor’s office: Video January 23, 2010

Of course, it happened with a doctor’s office, what else? An excerpt from the Washington Post report:
“The floor just outside examination room No. 2 — about 10 feet from where Ciampi had been doing paperwork — was littered with small pieces of wood, plaster and insulation. Upon inspection, more debris lay inside the room. He saw three chunks of stone on the floor that together formed a rock about the size of a tennis ball, with a glassy-smooth surface. Then he saw a hole about the size of the rock in the tile ceiling, and a tear in the maroon carpet where the rock had landed,” writes Paul Duggan of the Washington Post.

David Walkley from this prestigious organization describes how they use plug-and-play hospitals.

Webicina, the first medical web 2.0 guidance service, just published Cardiology and Web 2.0, a free comprehensive resource containing all the web 2.0 tools from quality blogs and communities to online slideshows and mobile applications. It was designed to help cardiologists save time and effort while searching online.
Please take a look at the table of contents:

- Cardiology in the Blogsphere
- Cardiology Podcasts and Interviews
- Cardiology Community Sites, FaceBook Groups and Forums
- Microblogging: Twitter and Friendfeed

PeRSSonalized Cardiology is an easy-to-use, free aggregator of quality medical information that lets you select your favourite resources and read the latest news and articles about cardiology in one personalized place.
Some reasons why it is unique:
- You can search in the database. It means you will find medical information only from a quality selected portion of the world wide web.
- You can personalize any of the sections.
- You can also receive the newest Pubmed articles focusing on your search term. Just insert your field of interest, a therapy, a condition, etc. and click Search. Then you can add the newly created box to your personalized medical “journal”.
- It’s meant to be a community-based project so we are open to suggestions. Please let us know which quality resources should be added to the database.

I’ve recently come across quite an interesting initiative, the Medical Doctor Interactive Television or MDiTV. Andrew Holtz, former CNN Medical Correspondent, will host the daily news program and Dr. Robert Lazzara is the founder. You can also follow them on Twitter.
Medical Doctor Interactive Television (MDiTV) is a health sciences media network founded in 2009, expected to launch in early 2010. The company is based in Portland, Oregon with an east coast studio in Tampa, Florida.
MDiTV is the first health sciences media network to exclusively use internet-based video content, making the information more meaningful and easily understood. MDiTV will be a new platform for the health care community to interact and share information, available through apps, smart phones, widgets, and television. It is the first network of its kind.
HONcode: Medical Question Answering Application January 20, 2010

All of my blogs are accredited by the Health on the Net Foundation because I consider this an important step in a medical blog’s life. They have recently conducted a survey about the service and they wanted to know how users would implement web 2.0 tools into medical websites (results in pdf). You can also check the new web 2.0 guidelines out.
HONcode announced HONqa, a question answering application.
The number of documents for a given request is constantly increasing, but the search for information for the lay person has not changed at all! While some rely on the advent of the Semantic Web to generate new intelligent search engines, others hope to facilitate the interaction with search engines by providing question answering (QA) systems. These are based mainly on heuristics and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms and the use of redundancy of information.
The goal of such systems is to provide relevant answers to a question in natural language. Thus the user directly accesses the information required and does not have to go through all the documents proposed by the search engine.
It’s far from perfect, but will definitely improve in the future.

Genome Sequencing Under $10,000 January 17, 2010

The estimated cost of the Human Genome Project that aimed to sequence the human genome was around $350 million. The dream line is around $1000, and now here is a new milestone. Illumina HiSeq 2000 costs $650,000, but it can sequence a genome for $10,000 and generates 200 gigabytes per run. Though even if we cross the $1000 line somewhere in the near future, I don’t think we are ready to implement this huge amont of data into medical decision making effectively. Technology moves faster than our understanding of clinical genomics.
Fellow bloggers’ reports:
The race for the $1000 genome is serious. Do you remember the new genome sequencer of Helicos? 1 billion basepairs a day:
Scan Your Sample Under an Electron Microscope January 17, 2010

I’ve recently received an e-mail from ASPEX that offers Scienceroll.com readers the opportunity to scan a sample of their choice with an electron microscope (Desktop SEM) for free. Here are a few examples.
What you have to do:
- Download and print this form and write “scienceroll.com” somewhere on the form.
- Fill out the form and mail it along with the sample you want scanned to:
175 Sheffield Dr.
Delmont, PA 15626
- Once ASPEX has completed the scan, the images and report will be posted on ASPEX’s website here.
- It should take about 2 weeks for the results to post to the ASPEX website, and submitters will be notified via email. Samples scanned for free will not be returned.
