Cameron Neylon who I had the pleasure to meet at last year’s Science Fo Camp published uniquely useful presentation about science and the online world. Now he focused on the problem of managing the scientific information overload which is an issue that affects nearly all scientists. I covered the topic in medicine a few months ago (Being Productive Online: Time-Management Lifehacks).
Cameron makes an excellent point on slide #46:
In the area of social web tools for scientists I’m confident that every significant (public) document and announcement crosses my attention stream without active searching.
That’s exactly what I feel. After a few years online, I think I’ve built many relevant and useful communities (one for medicine on Twitter, one for science on Friendfeed and one for other things on Google Reader) which now provide me with plenty of useful information without active searching.
