The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology which is the official publication of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology is the example for all the medical and scientific journals about how they should embrace social media.
- Proper RSS feed (believe me, this is a major element regarding peer-reviewed journals)
- Blog that serves as a journal club
- Twitter account
- Podcasts
- Facebook page

I think social media is going to become increasingly important in all industries. Facebook has over 400 million users, over half of which log on daily. How can a tool so powerful and far reaching be ignored?
Even if it’s always different in science, some tools will soon be used frequently.
You might want to check the latest version of our news aggregator at http://facebook.genomealberta.ca which uses all the tools you mention in your post.
This new version which went live a few weeks ago also has options to create new articles (not just post existing ones) , mash them up with videos, a comments section, a new calendar of events related to biotech, new Answers section, and an Ideas tab.
We also took our former ‘send-a-gene’ application and made it a tab so that the general user can have a little fun exchanging virtual genes.
Looks great on the iPad and the videos play and display pretty well.
We work with a group of partners to make it an Open Source platform which is also being used by several media outlets in the U.S.
It has the potential to really show what a science news site could be.
