Scienceroll Search: Improvements

WebLib made some improvements again to Scienceroll Search, the first personalized medical search engine.

Scienceroll Search is a personalized medical search engine powered by PolyMeta search and clustering engine. You can choose which databases to search in and which one to exclude from your list. It works with well-known medical search engines and databases and we’re totally open to add new ones or remove those you don’t really like.

  • Now Webicina.com is added to the database
  • Clusters became better as there can be more results for the search queries
  • Source clustering is available

HealthBase and the Semantic Fail

I wanted to write about Healthbase, a new medical search engine, but David Rothman was faster. He found some serious mistakes in the search itself.

Well, the concept to reduce the number of results to a definitive list of categories is a good one. But it leads to some mistakes. First, it searches in databases such as Wikipedia. You cannot find a bigger fan of Wikipedia than me, but still it’s not suitable for such a search engine.

Second, sometimes there are strange things in the results. Only one example below. It seems to suggest that a possible treatment for diabetes is mouse. Of course, it just found articles mentioning mouse models in the research of diabetes treatments, but it cannot deal with the information properly.

So there are a lot of things to do before becoming the ultimate engine. Until then, my suggestion is Scienceroll Search, the first personalized medical search engine:

NHS Evidence: Searching Evidence-Based Medicine

Two days ago, NHS Evidence was reported on the website of PHG Foundation:

The UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has launched a new portal to allow both health and social care professionals to access sources of clinical and non-clinical evidence. NHS Evidence will “help users identify the best evidence by sorting, sifting and prioritising a range of information” (see press release).

Let’s do a search for hypertension:

You can filter your results by areas of interest; type of information; clinical query; sources; medicines and devices.

Feel free to compare these with the results you can get on Scienceroll Search, a personalized medical search engine:

Now one of my favourite writers, Hope Leman at AltSearchEngines.com, reviewed Sciencerollsearch.com and had positive thoughts on our search engine:

I was quite impressed with the drug information I was able to find on ScienceRoll. I tried out as my search term Riluzole, the only drug that seems to have any effect in extending survival for those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and ScienceRoll very helpfully suggested, “Also Consider: Rilutek.”

I certainly found some excellent material on ScienceRoll. For example, if I were a nurse or health science student or simply a loved one of a person with a serious condition, I would try out ScienceRoll. It is a useful complement to MedlinePlus and indeed surpasses it in some ways in terms of comprehensiveness.

I’m so happy and I hope you will use and like the search engine. Your feedback, as always, is invaluable for us.
